Earth, Wind & Fire Drummer Faces Financial Strain After On-Stage Medical Emergency, Lacking Insurance

Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris is facing a significant financial challenge as he recovers from a cardiac incident and subsequent spinal cord injury, as his family has revealed he lacked medical insurance at the time of his emergency.

Paris, 58, experienced a medical emergency on August 6 while preparing to perform at San Francisco’s Chase Center. The incident led to the abrupt cancellation of the concert, which was set to feature Earth, Wind & Fire and Lionel Richie. Following more than two months of hospitalization, Paris has now been transferred to a rehabilitation facility.

His family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the extensive medical expenses, travel, lodging, and household bills incurred during his prolonged hospital stay. "After more than two months in the hospital, we have wonderful news: John has left the hospital and begun the next phase of his recovery in rehabilitation," stated fundraiser organizer Mashelle Clark. "This is a milestone we have prayed for — but it is not the end of John’s journey. In many ways, a new one is just beginning."

Clark further disclosed the gravity of the financial situation: "Today we need to share something we did not publicly discuss when this fundraiser began. John did not have medical insurance when this medical emergency occurred. John’s prolonged hospitalization, spinal cord injury, rehabilitation and continuing medical needs have created a financial situation far beyond what we anticipated when Standing With John began."

Paris's wife, Kathy Merrick, a member of the group Honey Cone, has paused her career to be by his side in San Francisco. The couple is reportedly exploring all avenues for financial assistance, including Medicare and workers’ compensation, though the extent of coverage remains uncertain.

The GoFundMe campaign has raised over $102,000 towards its $110,000 goal, with contributions from fellow musicians and fans. Earth, Wind & Fire bandmates Gary Bias and Myron McKinley, along with former Chicago musician Jeff Coffey, have made donations.

Meanwhile, the rescheduled concert in San Francisco has been canceled. The event was postponed multiple times, first due to Paris's medical emergency and later because Lionel Richie required a recovery period after a procedure for atrial fibrillation. Ticketmaster has confirmed the cancellation and is issuing refunds to ticket holders.

As Paris continues his recovery, his family hopes the public will support the musician who has dedicated his career to entertaining audiences worldwide. "John has spent a lifetime giving us music," Clark wrote. "Now let’s help John on the long road home."
