Earl Spencer Recalls 'Giddy Tone' in Prince Charles's Call After Diana's Death
Diana's brother shares his reaction to the then-Prince's demeanor during a conversation following the princess's passing.
Earl Spencer has described feeling a distinct "lightness" in the tone of the then-Prince Charles during a phone call that took place after the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. Spencer recounted the conversation in an interview with the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg, stating that Charles had called him from Cape Town to inform him about how he had broken the news to Princes William and Harry at Balmoral Castle.
"I felt there was a sort of giddy tone," Earl Spencer told the BBC. "I'd had a lot of calls that day from people who cared, who were stunned... and I just felt there was a lightness in his tone about Diana's death that really jarred with me."
His remarks come ahead of the publication of his book, "Swan Song: Diana, My Sister." Buckingham Palace issued a rare statement on Wednesday in response to claims made in the book. The statement noted that the King is "mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgement and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss."
