Earl Spencer: Claims about Charles post-Diana death would not surprise William and Harry

Earl Spencer has stated that his controversial claims about King Charles's reported remarks following Princess Diana's death would not come as a surprise to Prince William and Prince Harry. Spencer suggested that he had previously informed the princes that Charles, then Prince of Wales, had commented during a dispute over Diana's funeral arrangements that she would soon be forgotten.

The brothers are reportedly unaware of the full contents of Spencer's upcoming memoir, titled "Swan Song: Diana, My Sister," which includes the alleged comments from the King. However, in an interview with the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg, Earl Spencer indicated that he had shared these details with William and Harry previously, asserting, "I don't like to talk about what I've been speaking about to William and Harry, but this will not be a surprise to them. I will tell you that these words will not be a surprise to them."

The Royal Family has been contending with a series of significant claims from the memoir, with extracts published by the Mail last week. Earl Spencer's assertion that the then-Prince Charles told him, "Rest assured, we'll forget her soon enough," days after Diana's 1997 death, prompted an unusual public response from the Palace.

This alleged comment from Charles was reportedly made during a heated discussion with Earl Spencer regarding whether Princes William and Harry, who were 15 and 12 at the time, should participate in their mother's funeral procession. In response to the memoir's claims, a Palace spokesman issued a statement questioning the accuracy of Earl Spencer's account, suggesting that "fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory."
