James, Earl of Wessex, the 18-year-old son of Prince Edward and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, is reportedly working as a farmhand on King Charles' Sandringham estate this summer. The move comes as he awaits his A-level results and considers his university options.

Rather than taking a traditional summer break, the royal, who is 17th in line to the throne, has reportedly been seen operating farm machinery on the Norfolk estate. An employee at Sandringham told The Sun that James has been willing to "get his hands dirty and muck in," working long hours driving tractors, a departure from his usual public appearances at formal royal events.

This reported summer job aligns with the upbringing his parents have sought for him and his older sister, Lady Louise Windsor. The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh have consistently aimed to provide their children with as normal a life as possible, emphasizing a strong work ethic. Sophie previously spoke about preparing her children for future careers, stating in a BBC interview that she felt it was important for them to grow up normally and be equipped to "go out and get a job and earn a living later on in life."

In line with this approach, James and Lady Louise were not given the HRH titles they were entitled to at birth. Their parents allowed them to be styled as the children of an Earl, and they retain the option to use prince and princess titles upon turning 18, a choice neither has made.

James has largely remained out of the public eye compared to other members of the Royal Family. However, he has made several notable public appearances since turning 18 in December. He attended Royal Ascot in June and the Easter Matins Service at St George's Chapel in April, where he was seen interacting with Kate, the Princess of Wales. He also had a more prominent role walking behind the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children at the Easter service.

His sister, Lady Louise, also experienced working life before higher education, having worked at a garden centre before attending the University of St Andrews. James himself is known to have an interest in outdoor pursuits, including fishing, and has reportedly impressed gamekeepers at Balmoral with his enthusiasm for the sport.
