GB News is facing internal concerns over the prolonged absence of presenter Eamonn Holmes, who was hospitalized in April following a stroke. Insiders report limited contact with Holmes, 66, with his eldest son Declan now managing his affairs. This situation has exacerbated a perceived crisis of star talent at the network, leading to speculation about Holmes's return.
Sources indicate that many at the channel have accepted Holmes will not resume his previous role. "They have barely heard from him in months and he isn’t on social media any more," an insider told one outlet. Holmes's son Declan has reportedly been handling all work-related matters, including ongoing divorce proceedings from his estranged wife Ruth Langsford, to avoid causing his father further stress.
Holmes, who began his television career in 1979, is reportedly one of GB News's highest-paid stars with an annual salary of £450,000. His absence has placed additional pressure on his co-host, Ellie Costello, who has been tasked with keeping the breakfast show running with a rotation of presenters. Costello has privately expressed struggles with the weight of responsibility, feeling the pressure to maintain viewership.
Some GB News staff had reportedly expressed frustration prior to Holmes's stroke, suggesting he consider retirement following a series of on-air mishaps. These incidents reportedly included falling off his chair, shouting over colleagues and guests, and an on-air apology for remarks made to former pop star Kerry Katona. Despite these concerns, Holmes had previously denied accusations of falling asleep on air, stating he was adjusting his microphone. Staff described his on-air persona as "cheeky" and boundary-pushing, but also noted instances of irritability and a short temper towards some staff members.
The network's talent situation has been further complicated by other departures, including Isabel Webster, Alastair Stewart, and Simon McCoy. This has led to correspondents and reporters being drafted in to host programs, sometimes beyond their experience level. Stephen Dixon, Holmes's former Sky colleague and a regular weekend host on GB News Breakfast, has also recently taken time off due to health issues related to his Type 1 diabetes.
Despite these challenges, GB News has achieved some ratings milestones, including beating BBC News for the first time last year and winning a TRIC award for Best News Programme for the fourth consecutive time in June. Holmes had shared a statement at the time, expressing his pride and his intention to focus on recovery.
Holmes has a history of health issues, including mobility problems stemming from a 2016 double hip replacement, followed by severe pain from slipped discs and a dislocated pelvis. He has undergone spinal surgery and has used a wheelchair for several years. He is also in the process of finalizing his divorce from Ruth Langsford, with whom he had a 27-year relationship. His current partner, Katie Alexander, is reportedly supporting his recovery.
