Leon Jones, 20, has been sentenced to five years and four months in prison after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. The incident occurred on November 30, 2024, in the Wirral Peninsula, when Jones's e-bike collided with a scrambler bike ridden by Spencer Crofts, 17.
Evidence presented in court indicated that Jones was traveling at speeds up to 33 mph in a 20 mph zone and was performing a wheelie immediately before the crash. It was also revealed that Jones had consumed cannabis prior to the incident. Both Jones's e-bike and Crofts's scrambler bike were being ridden in a dangerous manner on Hoole Road.
Jones received a disqualification from driving for five years, commencing upon his release from custody, along with an extended re-test requirement. He was also concurrently sentenced for a separate arson offense involving a mobility scooter. His total custodial sentence amounts to five years and ten months.
Spencer Crofts, described by those close to him as his 'best friend,' had previously overcome leukemia as a child. His family has shared the profound grief and shock caused by his sudden death, stating it has 'destroyed' their close-knit family.
Merseyside Police stated that the case highlights the dangers of illegal and unroadworthy vehicles on public roads. Detective Sergeant Kurt Timpson noted the particular tragedy given the close friendship between Jones and Crofts. The force continues to address the dangerous use of illegal bikes through Operation Gears, targeting offenders and seizing such vehicles.
