Dylan Sprayberry, known for his role in MTV's "Teen Wolf," has publicly announced his conversion to Scientology. The 28-year-old actor revealed this development in a six-minute video posted to Instagram, stating he has been a Scientologist for three years.
Sprayberry, who has been sober for approximately five years, explained that he turned to Scientology as a means to address anxiety and depression, issues he believes led him to self-medicate with drugs and alcohol. He described a decade-long struggle with substance abuse, with his sobriety journey beginning around age 23.
"I was a chronic drug user for about 10 years," Sprayberry said in the video. "Around 23 is when I first got sober. About two years in [to sobriety], I was trying to handle that anxiety and that depression with these drugs. Now that I was sober, I could tell that it's still there. It's just suppressed. That was tough, but I had to confront it."
He detailed the initial steps of his Scientology practice, referring to a process called the "purification rundown." Described as a detoxification program, Sprayberry stated it aims to remove drugs and toxins from the body. He characterized the experience positively, noting that as an active person, the regimen of running and sweating in a sauna felt beneficial.
Sprayberry also highlighted L. Ron Hubbard's book, "The Way to Happiness," as a significant influence. He believes the book helped him understand that his past depression and anxiety stemmed from his own behavior and perspectives, rather than external factors. He emphasized the book's teachings on truth, self-care, avoiding drugs, and respecting others.
His announcement received a varied response from fans online. While some offered congratulations on his sobriety and apparent happiness, others expressed criticism of his affiliation with Scientology. Some comments questioned his choice, suggesting therapy as an alternative, while others shared positive personal experiences with "The Way to Happiness."
Sprayberry gained recognition for his role as a young Clark Kent in the 2013 film "Man of Steel" and later as Liam Dunbar in "Teen Wolf," appearing in the show for three seasons. His acting credits also include the 2023 "Teen Wolf" movie and the Tubi film "Baby Blue." In addition to his acting career, Sprayberry has also released two independent music EPs. He recently appeared in the Tubi horror film "Baby Blue."
