Dylan Efron Reacts to Derek Hough's 'DWTS' Mix-Up of Him and Tyler Cameron

Dylan Efron has shared his reaction to “Dancing With the Stars” judge Derek Hough mistakenly identifying him as Tyler Cameron during a live broadcast. The mix-up, which occurred last week, quickly became a trending topic and led to a viral social media moment.

Efron, who was backstage with Season 34 winner Robert Irwin at the time of the incident, described the moment as surprising but amusing. "It was funny, but I didn’t think it would turn into, like. I wasn’t sure if anyone else noticed,” Efron told Page Six. "Like, I’m more sensitive to it since it’s my name. But then immediately I saw Tyler and was like, ‘Hey, we need to go give Derek s–t.’"

Following the on-air gaffe, Efron and Cameron, with input from Cameron’s fiancée Tate Madden, created a humorous TikTok video poking fun at Hough’s mistake. Hough himself later joined in on the jest, sharing a video on Instagram where he playfully called cast members by incorrect names backstage, including mixing up Efron and Cameron once more.

"I’d be lying if I didn’t like the shoutout,” Efron admitted.

Returning to the “DWTS” ballroom, even as a spectator, brought back familiar feelings for Efron. He described the atmosphere as akin to a high school reunion, a sentiment that also evoked a sense of adrenaline, similar to his own time as a contestant. “You hear those three beeps before the song starts, and it’s like, you have some adrenaline pumping through your veins even though you’re not dancing,” he shared. “It’s just such a good environment there, so I still feel it.”

Efron, who placed fourth in the previous season of “DWTS,” offered encouragement to the new contestants. He expressed confidence in Season 35 contestant Ezra French, noting that French seems poised for success. “I had to fight my way from the bottom, I feel like — I think he’s already feeling like a finalist and potential winner,” Efron said.

In addition to his “DWTS” experiences, Efron is currently promoting e.l.f. Hair’s “Never Thirsty” line. He also reflected on his past controversial statement that “people shower too much,” indicating a shift in his perspective. "I was coming from a place of, I would go camping for two weeks and not shower and be totally happy, and now I’m like, ‘Oh, there are cool products out there that actually improve your skin and make you glow,’ and so I think I’m more knowledgeable in that area now,” he explained. Efron specifically noted the benefits of using conditioner for his curly hair, stating that it has helped him manage his hair more effectively. “And then conditioner doesn’t work without shampoo before, so I think that’s where this Never Thirsty shampoo and conditioner is actually helping me,” he added. “It is easy to put both on back-to-back, and then my hair is actually a little more, like, tamed every day. So, yeah, I do use soap way more than I used to, and it’s helped my curls.”
