Dylan Dreyer Awkwardly Questions Craig Melvin About GLP-1 Use On-Air
The 'Today Show' co-host's direct inquiry about weight loss medication left Melvin visibly uncomfortable.
Tensions flared on the '3rd Hour of Today' when co-host Dylan Dreyer directly asked Craig Melvin if he was using a GLP-1 medication. The exchange occurred Thursday morning as the hosts discussed a story about fast-food companies adapting to customers using weight loss drugs.
Following the segment, Al Roker playfully prompted Dreyer to reveal what she had asked Melvin off-camera. Dreyer confessed to asking if he was taking "the shot," prompting an uncomfortable look from Melvin, who is 47, while Dreyer is 45. She defended her question, stating it stemmed from genuine curiosity rather than judgment, noting that many people she knows are on such medications.
Melvin, however, expressed his displeasure, interpreting her question as potentially suggesting he should be on the medication. Roker attempted to defuse the situation by complimenting Melvin on his recent weight loss. Melvin acknowledged the weight loss but reiterated his discomfort with Dreyer's assumption.
Dreyer admitted to sometimes speaking without thinking. Roker humorously intervened, saying, "Mommy and Daddy are fighting," before the show moved to a new topic. Melvin did not confirm or deny using GLP-1s, though he has appeared slimmer in recent months.
In a 2020 interview with Men's Health, Melvin detailed his fitness routine, which included waking at 3:45 a.m. for his 'Today Show' duties and exercising after work. His regimen involved light abdominal exercises, walking lunges, leg presses, and biceps and triceps work.
This incident follows another tense on-air moment for Melvin last week when he confronted correspondent Tom Costello for being late to cover Labor Day weekend travel. Melvin sarcastically questioned why Costello would have missed his own segment, to which Costello explained his alarm clock had malfunctioned, causing him to oversleep for the first time in 23 years on the show.
Melvin playfully ribbed Costello about his outdated alarm clock, suggesting it was time for an upgrade, before Costello acknowledged the need to rely on his iPhone for alarms.
