Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has drawn criticism from fellow celebrities after announcing his decision to stop publicly discussing politics. George Takei and Wil Wheaton, among others, have publicly expressed their disappointment with Johnson's stance.
In an interview with Esquire magazine published earlier this month, Johnson stated, "I’ve learned I’m going to keep my politics to myself." He elaborated, "Politics is omnipresent and it’s forever. I don’t like it. I hate it at times. I hate the slinging. I hate all the bullshit that comes with it."
Takei, known for his outspoken political views, shared an article about Johnson's comments on social media, writing on Threads, "Silence is complicity." Wheaton responded to the news by commenting, "So disappointing to find out he is such a coward."
Johnson, who transitioned from professional wrestling to a successful acting career, has previously made political statements. In 2024, he told Fox News that he regretted endorsing former President Joe Biden in 2020, believing his endorsement had caused division among his fanbase. Johnson stated at the time, "My goal is to bring this country together. I believe in that. There will be no endorsement. At this level of influence, I will keep my politics to myself."
While Johnson has supported various causes and advocated for others' rights, he has not publicly commented on specific policies of administrations like that of former President Donald Trump. He noted in his Esquire interview that he admired musicians like Bruce Springsteen for speaking out during concerts, suggesting that communication is an important step, though he remained unsure of its ultimate impact.
