Dutch University Suspends Student Over Claims of Involvement in Oct. 7 Attacks

Maastricht University has suspended a Palestinian student following the emergence of a viral video in which he claimed involvement in the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks. The university has banned the student from entering campus buildings and participating in classes or exams, according to the university’s Observant Online outlet.

The video in question shows the student reacting to Al Jazeera’s coverage of the events, pointing at the screen and stating, "7 October. This is me." The university spokesperson stated that the suspension was enacted out of "concern for the safety of the student himself, fellow students and staff" and clarified that it should not be interpreted as punishment. The university has indicated it will speak with the student, though it is not launching an investigation into his claims.

The student is among over 40 Palestinians from Gaza who were invited to the Netherlands by the Dutch government for study or work purposes this summer. The decision has drawn criticism from some Dutch political figures. Diederik Boomsma, a lawmaker from the JA21 party, called for the student’s deportation and extradition to Israel. Boomsma questioned the screening process for these students and criticized universities for admitting individuals he described as "Gazan terror scum," urging the government to halt the issuance of provisional residence visas.

This incident occurs against a backdrop of heightened tensions and concerns regarding campus safety and free speech in the Netherlands. A Dutch Holocaust researcher, Amanda Kluveld, previously reported facing significant threats and intimidation at Maastricht University after speaking out in support of Jewish students. Kluveld described experiencing escalating threats to her safety, both on and off campus, including on-campus restrictions and disturbing incidents at her home.

In a separate event, Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten was briefly escorted off stage by his security detail during a speech in Amsterdam. Pro-Hamas activists disrupted his address at the Democrats 66 party congress, prompting the security intervention. While the protesters were removed, Jetten later returned to the stage, emphasizing the importance of freedom of expression in the country and describing the protesters' actions as "respectful." Earlier that day, masked individuals bearing a "We support Hamas" banner and a flag associated with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine terrorist group were observed outside the venue.
