DUP Leader Calls for Unionist Cooperation Ahead of Elections

Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader Gavin Robinson has called for enhanced cooperation among unionist parties to ensure the largest possible pro-union vote in the upcoming assembly and council elections. Speaking at his annual conference, Robinson stated that the party "will not be found wanting" in its commitment to work with other unionist groups to achieve this goal.

Robinson emphasized the need to avoid "gifting seats" to opponents like Sinn Féin, the SDLP, or the Alliance Party, citing instances in the 2022 assembly election where a divided unionist vote allegedly led to lost seats in constituencies such as Lagan Valley and North Antrim. "I am committed to constructively work and actively engage again with other unionist parties, as we have before, to get the largest number of pro-union candidates elected to the assembly and to our councils," Robinson told delegates.

He appealed to the unionist electorate to avoid staying home or voting for parties he described as focusing on internal unionist disputes. Robinson warned that a "weakened and divided unionism" would benefit Sinn Féin and potentially lead to "more power for them to take Northern Ireland in the wrong direction."

The DUP leader's address comes as the party faces significant electoral challenges. Having lost its leading position in the Stormont Assembly four years ago, the DUP is seeking to regain ground. Robinson's leadership, which began following Jeffrey Donaldson's conviction, faces the immediate challenge of the upcoming elections where he needs to demonstrate electoral success.
