A video circulating online shows a Dunkin' employee washing his feet in a kitchen sink at the chain's location on the Staten Island Ferry, prompting an investigation by the New York City Health Department. The footage, which first appeared on TikTok on August 11, quickly spread across social media platforms.

The video depicts the employee standing at the sink, appearing to use soap and water to wash his feet. An eyewitness filmed the incident, expressing disgust and questioning the practice near food preparation areas. Online commenters also reacted negatively, with many expressing concern about hygiene in a food service environment.

Sources suggest the employee may have been performing wudu, an Islamic ritual of purification involving washing specific body parts, including feet, before prayer. This ritual is commonly performed by Muslims five times daily before salah.

Despite the potential religious context, the location of the act—within a commercial kitchen inches from food preparation surfaces—drew criticism. One comment highlighted the need for appropriate religious accommodations in such settings.

The NYC Health Department stated that it promotes food safety and that restaurants must adhere to food safety requirements. The NYC Department of Transportation, which operates the Staten Island Ferry, indicated it is reviewing the incident and will take appropriate action. Dunkin' has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the incident.
