Duncan Sheik, the Grammy-winning musician best known for his hit song "Barely Breathing" and his work on the musical "Spring Awakening," has died at the age of 56. His family announced his passing on Friday, stating that he died of heart failure leading to cardiac arrest.

"The world has lost a singular talent, and deeply influential voice in music and theater," his family wrote in a statement shared on Instagram. "Duncan’s artistry touched many and leaves an indelible mark on the cultural landscape."

Sheik's family remembered him as a "father, husband, son, brother, and friend" for "his sensitivity, wit, intelligence, and depth of spirit he brought to those who knew and loved him."

Sheik gained widespread recognition in 1996 with his debut single "Barely Breathing," which reached the top of the Billboard charts. He later achieved significant acclaim in musical theater, earning two Tony Awards for his work on "Spring Awakening," which premiered on Broadway in 2006.

His family expressed gratitude for the "outpouring of love from his fans, friends, collaborators, and the artistic community," adding that "his musical legacy will continue to inspire generations to come."
