Dumfries and Galloway Named One of National Geographic's Best of the World for 2027

Dumfries and Galloway, a Scottish region often overshadowed by the Highlands, has been recognized by National Geographic as one of the top destinations to visit in the world for 2027. The region, home to the UK’s first Gold Tier International Dark Sky Park, is lauded for its exceptional stargazing opportunities, alongside its history and wilderness.

The inclusion on National Geographic's Best of the World list highlights Dumfries and Galloway as a prime spot for experiencing clear night skies with minimal light pollution. "This less traveled Lowlands region offers quiet trails and starry skies," the list stated, describing it as "one of the most breathtaking spots on Earth."

Mike MacEacheran, a National Geographic travel writer, emphasized the region's celestial appeal, noting the absence of light pollution and the presence of crisp, clear skies. He also pointed to the forthcoming Scottish Dark Sky Observatory, slated to open next year, as a further enhancement for the region's astronomical appeal.

Vicki Miller, chief executive of VisitScotland, commented that the region's appearance on the list is a testament to its strong appeal to visitors. She highlighted Dumfries and Galloway's offerings, which include world-class stargazing, unique wildlife, historic castles, dramatic coastlines, cycling and outdoor activities, as well as local food and drink.

Among the popular attractions in the region are the 13th-century Caerlaverock Castle, noted as the only triangular castle in the UK, and the 83-mile Rhins of Galloway Coast Path.

In 2012, UNESCO designated Galloway and Southern Ayrshire as a biosphere reserve, an area with strict regulations against farming and development, which was later expanded in 2023.

Councillor Stephen Thompson, leader of Dumfries and Galloway Council, expressed that the recognition by National Geographic is a significant honor, especially as the sole UK destination on the list. He stated that this acknowledgement celebrates the region's outstanding landscapes, dark skies, coastline, and walking and cycling routes, as well as the welcoming nature of its communities.

Thompson added that this recognition presents a substantial opportunity to elevate Dumfries and Galloway's international profile, bolster its visitor economy, and encourage more visitors to explore its offerings. He congratulated all involved for their contributions to earning this global acclaim.

National Geographic's annual Best of the World list aims to identify destinations that "illuminate the world and the diversity of communities and people within it."
