Dubois vs. Wardley Rematch Predictions: Experts Weigh In on Heavyweight Title Bout
Boxing figures largely favor Daniel Dubois to retain his WBO title against Fabio Wardley in their highly anticipated rematch.
Five months after delivering one of the year's most dramatic heavyweight contests, Daniel Dubois and Fabio Wardley are set to renew their rivalry in London on Saturday. Dubois, the reigning WBO world champion, makes his first defense of the title he won by stopping Wardley in the 11th round in May. Wardley, who suffered the first defeat of his professional career in that bout, immediately activated his rematch clause to pursue reclaiming the championship.
With a combined total of 41 knockouts from 43 victories between them, another explosive encounter is anticipated at the O2 Arena. Boxing professionals and pundits largely predict a repeat of the first fight, with most favoring Dubois to secure victory.
Barry Jones, a former super-featherweight world champion, believes Dubois will win earlier than in their first meeting. "I think it will be the same result but Dubois might win a lot earlier this time," Jones stated. "Wardley might knock him down and it will still be a thrilling fight while it lasts, but I think it will be Dubois inside five rounds."
DAZN presenter Ade Oladipo also favors Dubois, citing his dominance in the first fight outside of the knockdowns. "We know Wardley has the knockout power but I think Dubois is the best heavyweight in the world," Oladipo said. "I favour Dubois. We know Wardley has the knockout power but I think Dubois is the best heavyweight in the world... and I think he will take a lot of confidence knowing a) he is world champion and b) it's a very quick turnaround for Wardley who took a beating in the first fight five months ago."
British heavyweight Johnny Fisher echoed the sentiment, noting Wardley's tenacity but ultimately siding with Dubois. "For me, though, the smart money would be on another Dubois victory."
However, British heavyweight champion Richard Riakporhe offered a different perspective, slightly favoring Wardley. "I'd give Wardley a 60-40 edge, but I wouldn't be surprised either way," Riakporhe commented, highlighting Wardley's resilience and work rate.
Boxing content creator Liam Gough anticipates an even more aggressive performance from Dubois. "I expect Dubois to be even more aggressive and menacing from the opening bell," Gough said. "Dubois will look to impose himself immediately, put Wardley under pressure and take control of the fight early. This could be explosive from the very first exchange, so don't blink - because I don't think this one is going to last very long."
Former two-weight world champion Carl Frampton sees a similar outcome to the first fight, potentially ending sooner. "I think it's going to be a repeat scenario, and it may even end earlier," Frampton noted. "I see Dubois winning between rounds seven and 10."
Emily Eubank, a host for BBC Sounds' Punch Perfect, predicted a quicker win for Dubois, stating, "I think Daniel will pick up where he left off, making it an easier and quicker win than the first fight."
Former middleweight world champion Darren Barker anticipates Dubois' confidence will be a key factor. "Dubois' confidence now will take him into another stratosphere and makes him a very tough man to beat," Barker said. "I feel his jab and his know-how, and the new-found self belief, will be the difference."
Former UFC fighter Michael 'Venom' Page suggested Wardley's success in the first fight might have been a disservice, leading him to rely on a single tactic. "Wardley didn't adjust and I'm surprised he didn't," Page observed. "Some small adjustments and Wardley can turn it around but I will have to put my money on Dubois."
Representing Team Wardley, British heavyweight Jeamie TKV believes his gym-mate has the capability to win. "I do believe Wardley has the capability to get the win this time," TKV stated.
Former world title challenger Paul Smith predicts Dubois will win in the middle to late rounds. "I think Dubois has his number," Smith said. "I think Dubois will match him and weather the storm and use his feet like he did last time to nullify whatever Wardley does."
Journalist and broadcaster Nick Peet expressed confidence in Dubois, recalling his past accurate predictions for the fighter. "I've never gotten a Dubois pick wrong," Peet claimed. "Dubois by TKO, likely a little earlier than last time - as Wardley's corner won't be so brave second time around."
Despite the majority leaning towards Dubois, former cruiserweight world champion Tony Bellew predicted a Wardley knockout within six rounds. "I'm going to be the difference. I am going to back Fabio Wardley by knockout within six rounds. Yep, I said. I'm going for Fab within six."
