Duane Kuiper, Giants Announcer, Reveals Throat Cancer Diagnosis

San Francisco Giants announcer Duane Kuiper has been diagnosed with throat cancer, the team announced Sunday.

Kuiper, a legendary figure for the Giants, shared the news in a statement released by the team. "I was recently diagnosed with throat cancer and began treatment last week with my doctors at Stanford Medicine," Kuiper stated. "This cancer is unrelated to the one I experienced five years ago, and I’m optimistic that it will be successfully treated."

He is expected to miss some upcoming broadcasts as he undergoes treatment. "I’ll miss the broadcasts tomorrow and Wednesday as I continue treatment, but I’m looking forward to returning Tuesday and this weekend to celebrate my partner, Mike Krukow, and his remarkable career as he calls his final game before retirement," Kuiper added. He expressed gratitude for the support he has received from his family, the Giants organization, his broadcast partners, and others.

Kuiper previously underwent chemotherapy for a cancer diagnosis in 2021, which led him to miss a significant portion of that season. His longtime broadcast partner, Mike Krukow, announced his retirement earlier this year, with his final game scheduled for later this week.

The news comes during a challenging season for the Giants, who have struggled on the field. The team's on-field performance has been compounded by this personal health update for one of its most cherished broadcasters.
