Dual UK-Iranian National Released on Bail After Arrest Near US Air Base
Authorities are investigating a suspected plot targeting a U.S.-run military facility in England, with a dual national now on bail.
A dual U.K.-Iranian national arrested on suspicion of plotting a terror attack near a U.S.-run military air base in England has been released on bail, authorities confirmed Saturday. The 25-year-old was taken into custody on Thursday in London.
Authorities are investigating the incident at RAF Fairford, an air base used by American bombers to strike Iran. The individual was the sixth person arrested in connection with the security incident, and all five others, who are British nationals in their 20s from London, have also been released on bail.
During the investigation, police discovered gasoline in three vans linked to the suspects but no explosives. The incident has led to heightened tensions, with British officials linking the events to Tehran. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated there are "strong indications" of Iranian involvement, though he did not elaborate on the specifics of the alleged plot or the evidence.
Iran has denied any involvement in the matter. The country has previously asserted that any base used to attack its territory is considered a legitimate target.
RAF Fairford, located about 100 miles west of London, has a history of use by American bombers during conflicts in the Middle East, including recent operations.
U.S. officials have voiced criticism regarding the decision to grant bail to the suspects. President Donald Trump commented, "I wouldn’t have done that," and Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that the decision had disturbed many.
The arrests occurred amid a period of increased concern over threats from hostile states. British security services have reported a rise in national security cases involving activities by countries such as Russia and Iran, with a 50% increase observed in the six months leading up to December 2025. British officials have warned that Iran-linked proxies have been implicated in arsons and other attacks within the U.K. and internationally, often targeting the Jewish community with the aim of sowing fear. There are also concerns that Tehran could expand its targets in the U.K. if Middle East conflicts escalate.
