Police are conducting two separate searches in the South Australian outback for the remains of a missing four-year-old boy and a young mother who disappeared years earlier, just kilometers apart. The ongoing investigations highlight the challenges faced by law enforcement in vast, remote terrains.

Four-year-old Gus Lamont vanished from a sheep station approximately 400 kilometers north of Adelaide ten months ago. Authorities suspect foul play and believe he is dead, with his grandmother, Josie Murray, identified as a suspect due to alleged discrepancies in her account of his disappearance. Police arrested Murray for an unrelated charge of possessing a prohibited gun silencer, for which she was fined.

Simultaneously, authorities are continuing a search for Tanja Ebert, 23, who disappeared in August 2017 from a neighboring sheep station. Ebert lived with her husband, Michael Burdon, who police identified as the primary suspect in her murder before he died by suicide. A reward of $200,000 is offered for information leading to the conviction of those responsible for Ebert's suspected murder or the location of her remains.

Ebert, originally from Germany, met Burdon while working at a local pub. They married in 2017, six months before her disappearance. Burdon's mother and sister have expressed criticism of the police investigation into Ebert's case, describing the questioning of her husband as aggressive and claiming it led to his suicide. They have also voiced concerns about the handling of the search for Gus Lamont, drawing parallels to the investigation into Ebert's disappearance.

The two properties, Oak Park station where Gus was last seen and Oulnina Park where Ebert lived, are adjacent. Police have utilized extensive resources, including ground searches, horseback patrols, and aerial surveillance, in both investigations. The rugged desert landscape presents significant challenges for recovery efforts, with officials acknowledging that decomposition and environmental factors can hasten the disappearance of remains.

South Australia Police have stated that the disappearance and suspected murder of Tanja Ebert remain under active investigation. They declined to comment on specific operational aspects of either ongoing search.
