The parents of Gustavo Gordillo, the co-chair of the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), have been fined $2,500 for undertaking approximately $1.4 million in renovations on their Brooklyn home without the required permits. The New York City Department of Buildings issued a summons for the work at the Decatur Street property in Bed-Stuy.
A stop-work notice was posted on the residence after a Department of Buildings inspector visited the property, which had construction permits for its facade and interior work that expired earlier this year. The fine was issued to Chuciutto LLC, a limited liability company established by Gordillo's parents, who reside in Florida. The LLC purchased the home for just under $1 million in 2019.
The property, valued around $1.5 million before the renovations, recently drew attention when it was revealed that Gordillo, who advocates for anti-capitalist principles, was residing there. This disclosure followed an earlier report that he claimed residency at a different apartment in Crown Heights. Gordillo's father confirmed to The Post that his son lived at the Bed-Stuy home and that the family LLC had also rented an apartment for Gordillo in the Lower East Side from 2016 to 2019.
Prior to this, a New York Times reporter was reportedly misled by Gordillo regarding his living situation. At that time, Gordillo had not resided in the Crown Heights apartment for months and had faced legal action for alleged unpaid rent dating back to late last year. Gordillo was also publicly identified as a union electrician, an affiliation he used in media appearances. He had successfully convinced DSA members to approve a salary of $95,000 with benefits for himself. However, he was terminated by IBEW Local 3 in March after an extended period of absence from work, having been an apprentice for less than two years.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani has stated that Gordillo should not step down from his position as co-chair. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a potential presidential candidate for the DSA, was photographed with Gordillo recently, marking one of the first public appearances for Gordillo or the organization since the reports surfaced. Inquiries made to Gordillo and his parents were not returned.
