Gustavo Gordillo, a prominent figure in the Democratic Socialists of America's New York chapter, is facing accusations of hypocrisy regarding his financial background and professional affiliations. Gordillo, who has publicly advocated against capitalism and landlords, reportedly resides in a $1.5 million Brooklyn townhouse purchased and renovated by his father. His father confirmed to The Post that the LLC he owns acquired the home and funded its renovations, and that his sons reside there.

Gordillo, 38, has appeared on cable news discussing his views on economic policy, including statements against high investment returns. Prior to the Brooklyn residence, he lived in a Lower East Side apartment for which his father's LLC paid the $2,600 monthly rent from 2016 to 2019.

The New York Post also reported on Gordillo's claimed affiliation with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). While Gordillo uses the handle @unionGustavo on X, a spokesperson for IBEW stated that he is a "lapsed member" whose dues are delinquent. The spokesperson further indicated that Gordillo was "terminated" from the apprentice training program for failing to participate in required work and classes, suggesting he is not a practicing union electrician.

These revelations have led to criticism, with Gordillo being characterized as a wealthy individual who poses as a working-class advocate. The article draws parallels to other figures within the socialist movement, suggesting a pattern of individuals from privileged backgrounds espousing anti-capitalist views. Gordillo's background includes graduating from Yale University in 2010 and prior work in an art gallery before his claimed transition to the electrical trade.
