The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) has endorsed Donavan McKinney, a Michigan state lawmaker, in his primary challenge against incumbent Democratic Rep. Shri Thanedar, further highlighting divisions within the Democratic Party. The national DSA confirmed its endorsement of McKinney on Monday.

Thanedar, who represents a deep-blue district in the Detroit area and is seeking a third term, previously renounced his DSA membership in October 2023. He cited the organization's stance following the Oct. 7 attacks in Israel as the reason for his departure. "After the brutal terrorist attacks on Israel, which included the indiscriminate murder, rape, and kidnapping of innocent men, women, and children, I can no longer associate with an organization unwilling to call out terrorism in all its forms," Thanedar stated at the time.

McKinney had already secured an endorsement from the Detroit-area DSA chapter. His national endorsement was first reported by Politico. Notably, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., a self-identified DSA member, are among the sitting members of Congress backing McKinney over Thanedar.

This challenge is part of a broader trend where candidates supported by the far-left are gaining traction, particularly in solidly Democratic districts. Rep. Dan Goldman, D-N.Y., and Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairman Adriano Espaillat, D-N.Y., have recently lost their primary races to left-leaning challengers. In Colorado, DSA-backed Melat Kiros unseated longtime Rep. Diane DeGette, D-Colo., a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

These developments have prompted some moderate Democrats to express concern. Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, one of the most vulnerable Democrats in the upcoming election cycle, stated, "As a Democrat, I reject what the DSA is doing. I read their platform, and it is radical."

Republicans have utilized these primary outcomes to argue that the Democratic Party is shifting further left, potentially alienating a broader electorate. Thanedar has previously made headlines for his own progressive stances, including pushing legislation for a national reparations system and advocating for the impeachment of former President Donald Trump.
