Individuals identifying with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have signed a statement expressing support for "Chinese socialism," according to a report by Fox News. The statement, issued by an organization called "Friends of Socialist China," aims to "support the People’s Republic of China and to promote understanding of Chinese socialism."
The signatories, some of whom are described as having ties to the DSA International Committee, assert that "the continued survival of Chinese socialism is a crucial matter not only for the Chinese people but for all humanity." They further declare their resolution "to support, defend and build understanding of Chinese socialism."
The statement characterizes the idea that socialism leads to oppression as "propaganda." It argues for a "counter-narrative and corrective to this propaganda," which it claims portrays socialist states negatively, attributing this perception largely to "capitalist cultural hegemony."
Among the individuals listed as signatories are Mirah Wood, identified as "Co-Chair Middle East & Africa Subcommittee, DSA International Committee," and John McGrath, associated with the "DSA International Committee (anti-war)" in the United Kingdom. Both names have appeared on archived lists dating back to 2022.
The statement also posits that "the global advance to socialism is indispensable if humanity is to survive and to flourish," citing socialism's potential to prevent climate breakdown, end poverty, establish global peace, and dismantle structural discrimination and oppression. It claims the "record of the socialist countries" is "overwhelmingly positive."
