A Massachusetts state trooper was arrested and suspended after allegedly breaking into his ex-girlfriend's Boston apartment and falling asleep in her bed. Officer Michael E. McGuire, 37, faces a breaking and entering charge following the incident early Sunday morning.
The woman, who recently ended a month-long relationship with McGuire, told police they had spent Saturday night together drinking. She stated she asked him to leave around 10:30 p.m. when he became intoxicated, according to court documents reported by the Boston Globe.
Upon returning to her apartment, the woman discovered McGuire sleeping in her bed. She reported asking him to leave multiple times, but he refused. The woman and her roommate subsequently called 911 and exited the apartment to meet responding officers.
McGuire allegedly told the roommate he gained entry by climbing a fire escape. When officers encountered him in the lobby, they noted he appeared unsteady and had a small laceration on his forehead. McGuire claimed the victim hit him with an object but stated he did not want to get her in trouble.
A supervisor was called to the scene upon realizing McGuire was an off-duty trooper. The Massachusetts State Police immediately relieved him of duty and suspended him, citing the conduct as deeply concerning and falling short of professional standards.
McGuire was arraigned in Boston Municipal Court and released on his own recognizance with an order to stay away from the victim. His attorney invoked the BRAVE Act, which may allow for specialized treatment and a temporary pause in criminal proceedings.
