A former police officer has been sacked and handed a 12-month community order after being caught on camera violently grabbing a woman by her hair and pulling her towards the ground in a nightclub. Thomas Odell, formerly of Kent Police, committed the unprovoked assault on February 21 at Canterbury's Cuban nightclub. He was seen smiling and appearing to chuckle as the woman fled in shock.

Margate Magistrates' Court heard that Odell, 30, grabbed a fistful of the victim's hair and twice wrenched her head backward, forcing her towards the floor. Disturbing footage showed Odell holding the woman for about six seconds while continuing a conversation with others as if nothing had happened. He then released her hair and raised his hand, seemingly laughing, before grabbing her hair a second time as she tried to regain her footing.

The victim was left deeply distressed and has since reported being too frightened to go into the city without her boyfriend. In a statement read to the court, she said the incident had eroded her trust in the police due to Odell abusing his position of power. She added that her boyfriend was angry and it took him a long time to calm down after learning of the assault.

Odell initially denied the assault by beating charge but changed his plea to guilty ahead of a planned trial. His defense stated that Odell had consumed more alcohol than usual and had no memory of the incident, calling it out of character. He has since lost his job and is reportedly learning to become a bus driver.

District Judge William Nelson described the assault as entirely unprovoked and a deliberate act, emphasizing the risk of serious injury and the psychological harm caused. He noted that Odell's conduct, as a serving police officer, represented a significant breach of trust and eroded public confidence in the police force. Odell was sentenced to a 12-month community order with 150 hours of unpaid work and ordered to pay the victim £200 in compensation, to be paid at a rate of £20 per month due to his current benefit claims.

Kent Police confirmed Odell was dismissed following an accelerated misconduct hearing. Detective Superintendent Joanna Lay stated that officers acted swiftly to identify and arrest Odell, who was immediately suspended. The force emphasized that officers are expected to uphold the highest standards of professional behavior both on and off duty.
