Alistair Thompson, 34, has been sentenced for drunk and dangerous driving after crashing his Land Rover into a lamppost with his girlfriend as a passenger. The incident occurred on November 14 of last year in Aberdeen, Scotland.
CCTV footage shown to Aberdeen Sheriff Court depicted Thompson's vehicle airborne before colliding with the lamppost. Thompson was found to be more than twice the legal alcohol limit at the time of the crash. His girlfriend sustained injuries but has since fully recovered.
Thompson's defense solicitor stated that Thompson is remorseful and ashamed of his actions, describing his conduct as reckless and foolish. He has reportedly not consumed alcohol since the incident.
Sheriff Johnston noted that Thompson's decision to drive under the influence was particularly concerning given a previous conviction for drink driving in 2018. The sheriff emphasized the potential danger to the public.
Thompson was sentenced to 300 hours of unpaid work and a 40-month driving ban. He will be required to retake his driving test if he wishes to drive again.
