Newly released footage of Jamie Komoroski, a drunk driver who killed a bride on her wedding day, reveals conversations with her father in which he sympathized with her situation. Komoroski, now 27, was convicted in 2024 on felony charges of driving under the influence resulting in death and reckless homicide, receiving a 25-year sentence for the killing of Samantha Miller, 34. Komoroski struck Miller's golf cart on April 28, 2023, on Folly Island in South Carolina, as Miller and her husband, Aric Hutchinson, were leaving their wedding reception. Miller, still in her wedding dress, was pronounced dead at the scene, while Hutchinson and two relatives sustained severe injuries.
In jailhouse calls following her arrest in 2023, Komoroski expressed distress to her father, Charles. In one recorded call, she questioned, "I still just don't know why this had to happen to me." Her father responded, "Bad things happen to good people, honey. It's just something that happened to you, and we are going to deal with it as best we can, okay?"
Komoroski also voiced concerns about media attention, telling her father, "Everybody's going to be so mean to me." He advised her to "get tough." Later in the call, she cried, expressing her fear of a lengthy prison sentence, and at one point, screamed, "oh my god, oh my god, I can't believe this happened to me." She acknowledged the crash was "all my fault."
Komoroski's father suggested she go to rehabilitation if released on bond, and commented on her blood alcohol content reading of 0.261 percent, which was significantly above South Carolina's legal limit of 0.08 percent. In another call, her father insisted she was not a "bad person" and that the crash was an accident.
Following her arrest, Komoroski repeatedly asked officers for permission to call her father. During questioning, she exhibited casual behavior, discussing allergies and food preferences. However, footage from the crash scene showed her screaming, "Is she okay? Make sure she's okay," in reference to Miller. Initially, Komoroski told officers she had not been drinking, but later admitted to consuming two alcoholic beverages, including a "tequila pineapple."
Miller's husband, Aric Hutchinson, suffered two broken legs, extensive facial fractures, and traumatic brain injuries in the collision. During Komoroski's sentencing hearing, Hutchinson recounted the moments leading up to the crash, stating, "I wish I had died that night. I wish I had seen it coming. I'd have jumped off the golf cart so that you'd only have run me over. We did not get hit, we got ran through at 65mph."
