Convicted drunk driver Jamie Lee Komoroski was captured on body camera footage expressing frustration about her arrest in the moments after she fatally struck a bride with her vehicle. The incident occurred on April 28, 2023, when Komoroski, driving at 65 mph in a 25 mph zone, crashed her Toyota Camry into a golf cart carrying newlyweds Samantha Miller and Aric Hutchinson.
Miller, 34, died at the scene. Hutchinson sustained severe injuries, including broken legs, facial fractures, and a traumatic brain injury.
Footage from the police station shows Komoroski complaining about the circumstances of her arrest. She repeatedly requested to call her father, arguing that authorities lacked proof of her alleged intoxication. "I just, like, want to get over with and go home," Komoroski told an officer. She also stated, "nobody has any proof of anything that I did."
When an officer responded neutrally, Komoroski pressed the issue, pleading, "So give me the right to call my dad." Later, she admitted to crying because she was not allowed to contact her family. "I'm crying because they haven't proven s**t and don't have any right for me not to contact my family or anyone that I want," she said sarcastically to another officer.
Upon arrival at the crash site, the responding officer found the golf cart overturned and victims scattered. The officer's initial priority was to tend to Miller, who was still in her wedding gown. After unsuccessful attempts to revive Miller, the officer provided aid to Hutchinson and another member of the wedding party. The officer then attended to Komoroski, who was not physically injured.
According to the officer, Komoroski smelled of alcohol and appeared unsteady on her feet. When asked to rate her level of impairment on a scale of one to ten, she reportedly answered eight. She claimed to have consumed only one beer and one tequila about an hour before the crash. When asked to perform field sobriety tests, she refused and became uncooperative, the officer stated.
Komoroski was initially held without bond but was released in March 2024 on a $150,000 bond. She pleaded guilty to charges including reckless homicide, felony driving under the influence (DUI), and two counts of DUI causing greater bodily injury or death. She did not enter a plea deal, meaning a judge was not bound to offer leniency for avoiding a trial.
During her sentencing in 2024, Komoroski apologized to the victims, stating, "On the night of April 22, 2023, I chose to drink and drive which resulted in the death of Samantha Miller." She described it as the worst decision of her life and expressed deep remorse. "I will always be devastated, deeply ashamed and terribly sorry for what I have done," she said.
Despite her apology, Komoroski received a sentence of 25 years for reckless homicide, 15 years for the DUI charges involving great bodily injury, and 10 years for the felony DUI charge. These sentences are to be served concurrently. Komoroski is also facing a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Aric Hutchinson against her and the establishments that allegedly served her alcohol.
