Drumcree Dispute: Orange Order States No Resolution Proposals Available
Talks continue on the Drumcree dispute as the Orange Order reports no new proposals on the table.
Negotiations aimed at resolving the Drumcree dispute are ongoing, with Portadown District Master Nigel Dawson stating, "There are currently no proposals on the table." Both parties involved in the long-standing standoff received a document during separate meetings with Secretary of State Sir Chris Bryant on Wednesday.
The chairman of the residents' coalition indicated that his group would accept the document if the Orange Order did. The dispute stems from a planned Orange Order parade from Drumcree into Portadown on Sunday, which was prevented from proceeding due to a large protest on the predominantly nationalist Garvaghy Road.
Protesters have maintained a presence on the Garvaghy Road, though in smaller numbers, while the Orange Order continues to maintain a presence at Drumcree. Details of the document, revealed on Thursday's The Nolan Show, suggest the Orange Order would be acknowledged as having the legal right to parade on the Garvaghy Road. The residents would publicly accept this legal entitlement and concede that blocking the parade was wrong. In return, the Orange Order would agree not to march down the road.
However, Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) representative Carla Lockhart expressed that "What's on the table is not acceptable" on Wednesday. The Police Service of Northern Ireland's (PSNI) Chief Constable Jon Boutcher is scheduled to address the dispute at a public meeting of the Policing Board in Belfast on Thursday. The parade dispute is expected to be a dominant topic, with board members seeking the chief constable's security assessment and an update on the criminal investigation into the protest that blocked the Garvaghy Road.
One board member, Sinn Féin's Deidre Hargey, has faced calls for her barring from the meeting due to her presence at the protest, a situation unionists have highlighted. The PSNI has a criminal investigation underway into the protest that blocked the Garvaghy Road.
