Police found a range of drugs and medications inside the home of late NBA star Brandon Clarke following his death earlier this year, according to reports.
The 29-year-old was discovered unresponsive in a San Fernando Valley home on May 11. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office later confirmed Clarke's death was due to an accidental overdose, specifically citing the "effects of heroin and cocaine." The death investigation summary also noted that "combined effects of multiple prescription medications" were a contributing factor.
Investigators reportedly discovered a "cocktail of drugs" in Clarke's bedroom and bathroom. These items included vape devices, cannabis products, prescription medications, injectable peptides, syringes, a box of Narcan, and blister packets of various medications and vitamins. A plate with an unknown white powdery substance and a hotel key card were also found on the kitchen island.
Prior to his death, Clarke had a run-in with law enforcement in Arkansas where police found kratom, also known as 'gas station heroin,' in his vehicle. Video footage of the arrest showed Clarke asserting that kratom was legal. Officers also inspected other substances packaged with names such as 'gold rhino.' Six weeks after this arrest, Clarke was found deceased.
Clarke, a Vancouver native who played college basketball at Gonzaga before joining the Memphis Grizzlies in 2019, spent his entire NBA career with the team. His housemate reportedly told police that Clarke had a history of drug use and had previously sought treatment in rehab.
The Memphis Grizzlies issued a statement expressing heartbreak over Clarke's death, acknowledging his impact on the organization and the Memphis community.
