Drone Footage Shows Escaped Inmate Captured in Michigan Swamp

Dramatic drone footage has captured the moment an escaped inmate, Casie Jo Helsel, was apprehended by law enforcement in a Michigan swamp. Helsel, 44, had escaped from the Crawford County Jail in Grayling, Michigan, on Monday afternoon, prompting a multi-agency manhunt.

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by state police, pursued Helsel, who was believed to have fled into a nearby swamp. According to a Michigan State Police Facebook post, Helsel had a history of evading authorities by hiding in natural environments.

Footage released by the Michigan State Police shows officers and K-9 units navigating a wooded area using thermal imaging to track Helsel. An aviation team member can be heard in the video stating that Helsel’s typical strategy involves “hunker[ing] down, whether it be in the water, under a dock or on a stream on the edge and just wait ‘til night.”

The aerial operator guided ground teams to Helsel’s location, noting that the inmate was concealed beneath a pile of brush and debris. "You guys are almost standing on top of it, what we’re seeing heat-wise underneath the wood pile," the operator reported.

Officers located Helsel hiding beneath wood and debris. "We got him. We got him," the operator announced as Helsel was taken into custody just before 4 p.m. on Monday, less than two-and-a-half hours after his initial escape.

Investigators believe Helsel escaped through a service door that was left propped open. Sheriff Ryan Swope indicated that the door is typically used for transporting items into and out of the facility. However, authorities do not suspect the individual who left the door open did so intentionally to facilitate Helsel's escape.

Helsel has an extensive criminal record dating back over two decades, with prior charges including drug possession, obstruction of justice, unlawfully driving a motor vehicle, and fleeing from police.

It remains unclear if Helsel will face additional charges following his recapture. The sheriff’s office has stated it will conduct a review of the escape to implement policy changes and prevent future incidents.
