Teddy Picton, 20, was driving on the wrong side of the road when he struck 72-year-old Brad Craven in Grangetown, Cardiff, on May 17, 2025. Picton had cocaine and alcohol in his system at the time of the crash. He had also failed his driving test weeks prior to the incident.
Witnesses at the scene had to instruct Picton not to leave. He was driving a blue Fiat 500 without a license or insurance. Craven, a retired social worker, was described as a "gentle, caring, thoughtful man" and was wearing high-visibility clothing at the time of the crash. He was on a regular ride with his brother when the collision occurred.
Cardiff Crown Court heard that Judge Paul Hobson stated Picton knew he "should not have been driving." The driver, from Sully, Vale of Glamorgan, will serve two-thirds of his sentence before being eligible for release on license. The judge noted that upcoming changes in law could reduce this period to half.
Picton's father, Ken Picton, is a businessman and hairdresser.
