A driver has received a suspended prison sentence after striking and killing an 80-year-old pedestrian, John Nottingham, in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. The collision occurred on March 1, 2024, when Rosemarie Ozsko, 65, hit Mr. Nottingham as he was crossing the road. Mr. Nottingham died from his injuries the following day.

At Leeds Crown Court on Thursday, Ozsko was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months. She had previously pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving on July 1.

During the trial, the court heard that Ozsko struck Mr. Nottingham as she was turning into a left-hand filter lane, having proceeded through traffic lights as they changed from amber to red. Following the incident, Ozsko pulled over, and bystanders provided first aid until emergency services arrived.

Crash investigators determined that stuffed toys hanging from Ozsko's rear-view mirror had "significantly affected" her visibility. West Yorkshire Police stated that her view of Mr. Nottingham would have been clearer had these items not been present.

In addition to the suspended sentence, Ozsko was disqualified from driving for two years. Her residence was listed as Wakefield.

Mr. Nottingham's family described him as a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and family member, noting he is deeply missed by all who knew him.

Detective Sergeant Steve Suggitt emphasized the case's reminder of the importance of road safety and adherence to the highway code. He specifically highlighted the need for drivers to maintain a clear windscreen to ensure unobstructed visibility of the road and others. "Items such as mobile phones and Sat Navs should not be placed where they can interfere with your ability to see the road and those around you," Suggitt stated.

He concluded, "The tragic passing of Mr. Nottingham should serve as a warning to other drivers, and our thoughts remain with his loved ones."
