A vehicle crashed into a toll plaza at Sunken Meadow State Park on Long Island on Monday, resulting in a fiery explosion that killed the driver and left the remains unrecognizable. The intense blaze made it impossible for investigators to immediately determine the type of vehicle involved.
The incident occurred shortly after 11 a.m. when the vehicle struck an unoccupied toll booth. State police responded to the scene at the northern end of the Sunken Meadow Parkway. The crash caused the vehicle to burst into flames, with the fire reaching such intensity that it destroyed evidence of the car's make and model, as well as the driver's identity.
Smithtown firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, which was fully doused shortly before 1 p.m. Troopers, state park police, and Suffolk County police also responded to the scene. The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation into the fatal crash.
Authorities stated that one deceased occupant was found inside the vehicle. Due to the extensive damage, a significant part of the investigation will focus on identifying the driver and the vehicle. The crash led to the temporary closure of the entrance to Sunken Meadow State Park as authorities worked the scene.
