Ethan Loveridge, 20, of Llanbradach, Caerphilly county, has been sentenced to five years in prison after admitting to causing serious injury by dangerous driving and a series of drug-related offenses. The incident occurred in August 2024 when Loveridge lost control of his Kia Sorento on the A468 in Caerphilly, clipping another vehicle before colliding head-on with the car driven by Martin Howells.

Howells, 50, sustained severe injuries in the crash, including eight broken ribs, a broken nose, a detached bicep, and nerve damage to his neck and shoulder. He was unable to work for 10 months following the collision. In a statement read to Newport Crown Court, Howells described the event as a "horrific crash that has changed my life forever." He underwent 18 months of physical therapy and eight months of psychological therapy for PTSD. The injuries have left him with permanent weakness in his arms, preventing him from lifting objects above shoulder height and impairing his ability to play the guitar, a pastime he cherished. The crash also impacted his ability to fully enjoy the arrival of his grandson, who was born six weeks later.

Loveridge was also sentenced for drug offenses. On June 26, 2025, he and his then-partner, Elise Humphreys, 21, were stopped by police in a Ford Mondeo. During the stop, they were observed discarding items from the vehicle. A subsequent search uncovered cannabis and cash. Analysis of seized mobile phones revealed evidence of Loveridge and Humphreys being involved in supplying cocaine and cannabis for six months. A search of Loveridge's property uncovered 810 grams of cannabis with an estimated street value of £8,000.

Loveridge pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, possession with intent to supply a Class B drug, being concerned in the supply of Class A and B drugs, and possession of criminal property. Recorder John Philpotts noted Loveridge's awareness of the severe consequences of a head-on collision and stated that he was fortunate no fatality occurred. Loveridge received a five-year prison sentence and a four-year driving disqualification. Humphreys was given a 12-month community order, a 15-day rehabilitation activity requirement, and a six-month curfew monitoring requirement.
