Driver Denies Causing Deaths of Three Scooter Riders in Wiltshire Collision

Hugh Campion, 71, has pleaded not guilty to eight charges stemming from a collision on the A36 at Knook, Wiltshire, on May 31 of last year, which resulted in the deaths of three Vespa scooter riders. Campion's red Toyota Prius allegedly collided with three scooters traveling in the opposite direction.

Robert Best, 62, died at the scene, while Marie Jones, 64, and Timothy Davies, 62, passed away in hospital. Campion, from Upton Scudamore in Wiltshire, denied three counts of causing death by dangerous driving and three counts of causing death by careless driving at Salisbury Crown Court. He also pleaded not guilty to causing serious injury to Gary Jones, Mrs. Jones's husband, by dangerous or careless driving.

A trial lasting up to 10 days is scheduled to begin on June 1, 2027, with a pre-trial review set for April 30. Campion was released on unconditional bail.

The victims were members of the Yate and Sodbury scooter club and were embarking on a trip to Normandy, France. Andy Davis, a co-founder of the club, described the deceased as "big parts of the club" and individuals known since childhood. Mr. Best and Mr. Davies were riding their scooters, while Mrs. Jones was a passenger on another.

The club has canceled its summer festival and initiated a fundraising effort for three air ambulance charities, which has raised over £25,000 in the victims' memory. The families of Mr. Best and Mrs. Jones have shared tributes, highlighting their positive impact and the devastation caused by their loss.

The scooter club issued a statement mourning the loss of their "brothers and sister," emphasizing their close-knit community and the profound impact of the incident.
