Driver Denies Causing Deaths of Three Scooter Riders

A 71-year-old driver has denied causing the deaths of three Vespa scooter riders in a collision on a country road in Wiltshire. Hugh Campion pleaded not guilty at Salisbury Crown Court to eight charges stemming from an incident on the A36 at Knook on May 31 last year.

Campion, driving a red Toyota Prius, allegedly collided with three Vespas traveling in the opposite direction. Robert Best, 62, died at the scene, while Marie Jones, 64, and Timothy Davies, 62, died in hospital. Campion also denied causing serious injury to Gary Jones, Marie Jones's husband, by dangerous or careless driving.

The three victims were members of the Yate and Sodbury scooter club, based in South Gloucestershire, and were beginning a trip to Normandy, France. Andy Davis, co-founder of the club, described the deceased as "big parts of the club" and individuals known since childhood. Mr. Best and Mr. Davies were riding their scooters, while Mrs. Jones was a pillion passenger. Her husband sustained broken bones in the crash.

A trial lasting up to 10 days is scheduled to commence on June 1, 2027, with a pre-trial review set for April 30. Campion was released on unconditional bail.

The scooter club has been fundraising for three air ambulance charities, raising over £25,000 in memory of the victims. A statement from the club described the loss as having "shaken us all" and emphasized their unity as a "close-knit family." Mr. Best's family stated he was "loved and adored by all who knew him," and Mrs. Jones's family said the "cherished" grandmother passed away surrounded by loved ones. The club remembered Mr. Davies for his ability to bring laughter on dark days.
