A violent road rage incident on Interstate 5 in Carlsbad, California, resulted in two people being stabbed and the alleged assailant's arrest. Orlando Query Chavez, 49, was taken into custody by Oceanside Police shortly after the Sunday evening altercation.
The incident began around 7 p.m. when Chavez, driving a black Chevrolet, rear-ended a white Chevrolet Silverado on the I-5 off-ramp at Tamarack Avenue, according to reports.
Witness accounts and video footage indicate that after the collision, Chavez exited his vehicle and confronted the occupants of the Silverado. A witness identified as Isaac Mandlawi told NBC 7 that Chavez first struck the 23-year-old female driver multiple times before moving to the passenger side and stabbing the 27-year-old male passenger approximately five times.
Mandlawi, who assisted the victims, described the suspect as acting erratically, pacing back and forth before the assaults. Paramedics treated the injured male, who sustained wounds to his stomach and leg. The female driver also appeared to have sustained injuries to her face.
Chavez was booked into the Vista Detention Facility and is facing charges of attempted murder and battery with serious bodily injuries. Jail records indicate he is being held without bail. Mandlawi confirmed that both victims have since been released from the hospital.
