Drew Eubanks Waived by Knicks After Torn Pectoral Injury
Veteran center's injury opens door for James Wiseman in roster battle.
The New York Knicks have waived veteran center Drew Eubanks after he suffered a torn pectoral muscle, a source confirmed Thursday morning. Eubanks was competing for the team's final roster spot against centers James Wiseman and Tony Bradley.
Wiseman had emerged as the early frontrunner for the 14th roster spot, according to previous reports. His recent performance, including an 18-point, 10-rebound outing in a loss to Toronto, appeared to strengthen his position.
Coach Mike Brown has emphasized the need for the player filling this role to bring passion, energy, and focus, regardless of fluctuating playing time. "We just hope that there’s a passion and an energy and a focus coming from that spot," Brown stated. "You just look for somebody that’s going to play hard at the end of the day – try to do the things that you’re asking on both sides of the floor. And bring a little something different than what the two guys in front of you bring."
Eubanks, 29, brought the most experience among the center candidates, with eight NBA seasons, including his time with the Sacramento Kings last season. In Tuesday's game against Toronto, he played 15 minutes, scoring eight points and grabbing two rebounds.
The Knicks can only accommodate one additional player while staying under the second apron. While veteran guard Bruce Brown is also on a non-guaranteed deal, the team's priority has been filling the center position. Retaining Bruce Brown would necessitate the Knicks shedding salary through a trade.
