Dre Greenlaw Mocks Sean Payton After Sideline Clash
The 49ers linebacker, a former Bronco, suggested he hadn't spoken to his ex-coach in months.
San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw appeared to take a jab at Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton following a heated sideline exchange during Sunday's game. The 49ers ultimately defeated the Broncos 24-14.
Greenlaw was seen exchanging words with Payton in the first quarter. The interaction seemed to stem from Greenlaw's tenure with the Broncos last season, which was reportedly disappointing for all parties involved.
Speaking to the media after the game, Greenlaw addressed the incident. "I mean, I just haven’t talked to him in months. Even since I was on the team. So, it’s just a lot," Greenlaw said, per KNBR. Greenlaw's previous stint with the Broncos ended after the season, allowing him to return to the 49ers, where he began his NFL career.
Payton also commented on the interaction with his former player. "I said this to [49ers coach Kyle Shanahan] afterwards: I think the world of him," Payton stated, per Zac Stevens. "Really, love everything about him. He plays with that emotion. So, all good."
The exchange highlighted lingering tension between Greenlaw and Payton, stemming from Greenlaw's dissatisfaction with his role upon returning from injury during the latter half of the previous season.
