Dre Greenlaw Ejected After Sideline Altercation, Faces Potential NFL Discipline
San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw was ejected from Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks after a heated exchange on the sideline, and the NFL is expected to review the incident for further disciplinary action.
San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw was ejected from Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks after an incident on the opponent's sideline. The play occurred in the second quarter when Greenlaw hit Seattle's Sam Darnold as the quarterback ran out of bounds near the Seahawks' bench.
Following the hit, Greenlaw was met by Seahawks players on their sideline. Ernest Jones, a Seahawks linebacker, confronted Greenlaw, who was still wearing his helmet. The situation escalated when Greenlaw headbutted Jones. FOX NFL cameras captured Jones using a towel to wipe his face, with an apparent cut visible.
Greenlaw was immediately flagged for a personal foul and subsequently ejected from the game. The NFL's operations department will now review the incident. According to NFL guidelines, the league office can issue a fine, a warning, or a suspension based on the severity of the action, with decisions made on a case-by-case basis.
This is not the first time Greenlaw has been involved in a sideline altercation. In the 2025 season, while playing for the Denver Broncos, he was suspended for verbally threatening a referee after a game. He was also fined $11,941 for unsportsmanlike conduct after taunting the Broncos' sideline and head coach Sean Payton earlier in the season. In 2023, Greenlaw was ejected for an altercation with Philadelphia Eagles head of security Dom DiSandro during a game that also saw Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni involved in a heated exchange.
Potential discipline for Greenlaw could include a fine or suspension, depending on the league's assessment of his actions as conduct detrimental to the NFL or a severe violation of player safety.
