Draymond Green is returning to the Golden State Warriors on a one-year contract worth $27.7 million, according to Klutch Sports. This agreement comes after Green declined his original player option of the same value in June, a move intended to provide the Warriors with salary cap flexibility to pursue LeBron James.
The Warriors had reportedly believed they had a genuine opportunity to sign James and pair him with Stephen Curry. However, James ultimately chose to sign a two-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers. Golden State's effort to acquire James proved unsuccessful, leading them back to retaining Green.
Green, represented by Klutch Sports founder Rich Paul, was part of a strategy that prioritized acquiring James. With James signing with Philadelphia, re-signing Green became the most logical path forward for the Warriors' management. General manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. was left with fewer options after the pursuit of James failed, especially considering previous reports linking Green to trade discussions with the Milwaukee Bucks.
The one-year term of Green's new contract was a concession secured by Dunleavy, aiming to preserve future flexibility. This shorter commitment avoids a longer-term investment in an aging player, as Green is no longer the same athlete he was during the Warriors' championship dynasty years. The team retains its emotional leader and defensive anchor, though the roster appears to be beyond its championship window. Golden State cleared cap space in pursuit of James, failed to sign him, and then paid Green the amount he would have originally earned anyway.
