Drake Maye Denies Rift with Patriots Coach Vrabel Amid Early Season Struggles
Quarterback addresses rumors linking team performance to offseason distractions.
New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye has publicly refuted claims of a strained relationship with head coach Mike Vrabel, pushing back against speculation that team struggles are connected to Vrabel's offseason personal matters. The Patriots, who made a surprise run to the Super Bowl last season, have started the current season with a 1-2 record, and Maye has led the league in turnovers.
Reports surfaced on local radio suggesting tension between Maye and Vrabel. However, Maye expressed strong support for his coach. "Coach [Mike] Vrabel's been one of the best football coaches I've had in my life," Maye told reporters. "I've loved playing for him, and it's not going to change. The way he pushes me, and he coaches the quarterbacks in a way that I really respect, and I'm looking forward to getting going, proving to Coach that I can lead this football team and play good football."
Vrabel echoed these sentiments, stating during his weekly appearance on The Greg Hill Show that Maye's presence was the primary reason he accepted the Patriots' head coaching position. "Believe it or not, I had choices of where I wanted to coach. I wanted to coach here because Drake was the quarterback," Vrabel said.
Analyst Stephen A. Smith had suggested on ESPN's First Take that Vrabel's offseason dealings, which involved NFL insider Dianna Russini, might have affected his preparation and, consequently, Maye's performance. Smith posited that these distractions could have compromised Vrabel's usual focus on coaching.
Maye acknowledged that he has been dealing with a shoulder issue that landed him on the injury report. However, he asserted that the injury has not impacted his decision-making or play. "No, it hasn't. It hasn't, and I think it doesn't impact my decision making, and that's what makes and breaks play for quarterbacks," Maye stated. "I don't feel like we're struggling to move the ball. I think we're turning the football over, doing things that are preventing us from scoring touchdowns, and I think that's one of the biggest things for me."
The Patriots are preparing to face the Buffalo Bills this Sunday, following a significant 35-6 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
