Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Drake London was involved in a verbal altercation with a fan during the team's 34-3 defeat against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. Cameras captured London shouting towards the stands, with the receiver appearing to tell the supporter, "I will f*** you up."
London later addressed the incident, stating that he was targeted with "personal" abuse but acknowledged that he should not have reacted. "I don't take light to disrespect at all," London said, according to ESPN. "I don't care who you are. I'm a man, too, at the end of the day. So, if you want to get on a personal level, I can get there, too, but it's not the right thing to do. So, I got to take accountability for that, and I got to push forward and be the bigger man in some of those situations."
He added that the game's context and the nature of the comments directed at him contributed to his reaction. "But with how the game was going and what was said to me, I don't like it."
The Falcons have started their season with a 0-2 record following the significant loss at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The team also saw quarterback Cooper Rush benched in favor of undrafted rookie Jack Strand after struggling performance that included interceptions and a lost fumble. Atlanta is currently contending with injuries at the quarterback position, as Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa are sidelined.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski expressed disappointment with the team's overall performance. "I'm disappointed in our performance as a football team," Stefanski stated. "That's all of us. It's not just one position. Disappointed, and I'm going to make sure that we look at answers and not pinpoint one position, if you will."
London, who recently signed a four-year contract extension worth $141 million, recorded four receptions for 51 yards in the game.
