Dr. Ranj Singh's ex-wife, Sulvinder Samra, has spoken about the impact of his public coming out as gay, stating she learned the news through friends and that the end of their seven-year marriage left her feeling unattractive.
Samra, who was married to the TV doctor from 2006 to 2011, revealed her feelings on the 'Best Suddenly Single' podcast. She expressed hurt that there was no direct discussion with her when Singh, then 46, realized his sexuality while they were still married, a realization he reportedly had after therapy.
"The very first article that I know about was back in 2016, I think. And I wasn't expecting it... at that time, it hurt. Like, I found it hurtful to me," Samra said. She added that her marriage continues to define her in many ways, noting that a Google search of her name often leads to information about her ex-husband's sexuality and their past.
She described the final year of their marriage as difficult, marked by a significant disconnect, even before she knew her husband was gay. Following their divorce, Samra admitted to feeling "really unattractive" and questioning why he had fallen in love with her, a sentiment she described as "going down this little rabbit hole as a woman."
Samra, who now works as a nervous system coach for women, has cut off contact with Dr. Ranj, blocking him on social media to protect her well-being and remaining unaware of his current partner. She indicated that public articles about their marriage are often her only source of information about his life.
In a May interview with The Big Issue, Dr. Ranj recalled the end of his marriage, stating his life "fell apart" but that he found solace and a "chosen family" within the LGBTQ community. He confirmed his relationship with actor James Colebrook in 2025, after having publicly come out in 2016.
In response to Dr. Ranj's accounts, Samra shared her perspective, noting it took years for her to heal and that she struggled with feelings of inadequacy. She also questioned her ex-husband's motivations for recounting their shared history.
Last month, Dr. Ranj released a statement on Instagram, asserting he never "deliberately" hid anything about himself or intentionally misled anyone. He also stated he looks back on his past marriage with "nothing but respect, gratitude and kindness."
Dr. Ranj and Sulvinder Samra met in 2003 while working at King's College Hospital. They married in 2005 and divorced in 2011. Singh later confirmed his relationship with Colebrook, describing finding acceptance in the gay community as a moment of "wings finally unfolding."
