Dr. Mehmet Oz, administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), has expressed support for GLP-1 medications, such as Ozempic, stating they can be effective tools for weight loss when used appropriately and in conjunction with lifestyle changes and medical guidance. He believes these drugs can help address the surge in chronic diseases, for which obesity is a primary driver.

Oz highlighted that obesity is the leading cause of chronic conditions, which account for about 70% of U.S. healthcare spending. He projects that the increased use of GLP-1s for weight management could lead to Medicare savings by improving beneficiaries' health and reducing their need for extensive medical services.

"I'm a fan of GLP-1 drugs when used correctly," Oz told Fox News Digital. "They do help people who are overweight lose weight quite effectively. They're not a replacement for diet and exercise, but they might jumpstart the system so it’s easier for you to use healthier tactics."

The CMS has launched the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program, which aims to provide seniors meeting specific health criteria and prior authorization with access to these medications for a reduced monthly cost of $50. This initiative seeks to broaden access beyond individuals with pre-existing conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes, who are already covered under certain Medicare plans.

Oz acknowledged that while GLP-1s offer significant benefits, they are not a cure-all. He stressed the continued importance of foundational health practices, including a proper diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, stress management, and finding purpose in life. He emphasized that these elements, along with appropriate medication use, contribute to overall well-being and longevity.

"I don't want people being fat-shamed," Oz stated, recognizing that weight management can be complex due to individual biological differences and life circumstances. He encouraged individuals to utilize all available tools, including medications when suitable, to care for their health.
