Dr. Drew Pinsky Compares Smartphones to 'Crack Pipe' Amidst Addiction Concerns

Dr. Drew Pinsky has drawn a stark comparison between smartphones and a "crack pipe," asserting that these devices place readily accessible avenues for gambling and sexual behavior directly into users' hands. Pinsky voiced these concerns during Tuesday's episode of "Hang Out with Sean Hannity."

"I want you to think gambling and sex in the same thought," Pinsky stated. "It's really on right now, those two behavioral addictions."

Pinsky elaborated on the nature of gambling addiction, distinguishing between those who seek the thrill of winning and the majority who are driven by the desire to lose, finding purpose in high-stakes situations. He also described a "sociopathic gambling" where individuals manipulate systems to achieve victory.

Regarding sex addiction, Pinsky identified pornography as a significant contributor to its rapid growth. He also spoke in support of group-based recovery programs, suggesting that such communities effectively police themselves, treating interpersonal sexual relationships as a serious impediment to recovery.

Pinsky indicated that alcoholism is often intertwined with these behavioral addictions. His remarks coincide with recent research on evolving drinking habits in the U.S.

A study from the University of Southern California/Keck Medicine revealed that while overall alcohol consumption has declined slightly, heavy drinking has increased in certain demographics. Between 2018 and 2024, adults aged 50 to 64 saw a nearly 4% increase in alcohol use, with heavy drinking rising by over 36% in the same group. Across all age brackets, alcohol use decreased by almost 2%, and heavy drinking by more than 8% from 2022 to 2024. Gen Z and Millennials, in particular, showed significant reductions in alcohol consumption during this period.

Pinsky's full conversation with Sean Hannity is available on platforms including iHeartRadio, YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts.
