Dozens of Migrants Rescued After 30-Hour Sea Journey, Diverted to Dover

Dozens of migrants have been brought ashore in Dover, England, after spending more than 30 hours at sea. The group, who departed from the Normandy coast on Monday morning, were initially reported to be heading for Gosport in Hampshire.

The French coastguard reported that approximately 60 migrants on the boat were in "precarious conditions" and had refused assistance, expressing a determination to reach the United Kingdom. British rescue boats were dispatched on Tuesday to intercept the vessel and transfer the migrants to Border Security Command.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) was tasked by HM Coastguard to assist the dinghy shortly after 11:00 BST on Tuesday, by which time the crossing had been underway for 36 hours. The RNLI stated that the coastguard requested the removal of individuals from the dinghy due to concerns for their safety and deteriorating health, prior to the arrival of Border Force vessels.

Initial communications from the Home Office suggested that an arrival in the Portsmouth area was becoming increasingly likely, a prospect acknowledged as "far from ideal." The Home Office stated that any decision to bring a vessel ashore would only be made if operationally necessary and after careful consideration of all options.

The prospect of migrants arriving in Gosport prompted a gathering of protesters, including hundreds of demonstrators and police, near the town's marina on Tuesday evening. Some individuals in the crowd were reportedly chanting anti-migrant slogans, and a number of men wearing black clothing and face coverings were observed at the front of the protest. Daniel Thomas, a campaigner against migration who has organized similar protests in Portsmouth and Dover, shared live streams of the boat from the English Channel.

Later in the evening, around 19:00 BST, Conservative MP for Gosport, Caroline Dinenage, announced that Border Force had intercepted the small boat and was rerouting it to Dover. Dinenage described this as a "good result" and stated she had advocated against the boat disembarking in Gosport. Protests in Gosport concluded around 20:30 BST. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary later reported that six people were arrested in Gosport on Tuesday evening following confrontations with officers.

The migrant dinghy is believed to have departed from an area near Vierville-sur-Mer, west of Bayeux, a departure point rarely used for small boat crossings to the UK. This incident follows a similar event earlier in the month where a dinghy launched from near Cherbourg, further west than usual, was brought ashore in Hampshire, also triggering protests in Portsmouth.
