Thirty-six Border Collies rescued from a severely neglected home in Palm City, Florida, are on the path to recovery at the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast. The dogs were removed from the residence of Paige O'Donnell, 62, on August 10, 2026, following an investigation into animal hoarding.

O'Donnell faces 36 felony counts of animal cruelty and 36 misdemeanor charges for failing to provide adequate exercise or ventilation. Martin County Sheriff's officials initiated surveillance after receiving complaints from neighbors. The conditions inside the home were described as so deplorable that deputies and animal control officers required protective clothing.

Deputies reported that feces covered nearly every surface of the house, with urine-soaked materials, boxes, and debris obstructing the living spaces. The structure itself was deteriorated, with damage extending to the walls and furniture.

"The dogs were unrecognizable as they pulled them out," Sheriff John Budensiek stated, noting the severe matting of their fur due to poor grooming and neglect. "These are beautiful dogs, naturally, and now with the matted hair and the poor condition they’re in, it’s pretty tough to see."

Following their rescue, the dogs were taken to the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast, where caretakers have observed positive changes. The shelter shared on Facebook that the animals are exhibiting "signs of joy and healing as the weight is literally lifted off their shoulders." They are actively observing the dogs relearn basic behaviors and adjust to their new environment.
