Dozens Arrested Blocking Brooklyn Bridge in Anti-ICE Protest
Activists demanding ICE cease-fire and release of detained immigrant face charges after disrupting traffic.
More than a dozen anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) protesters were arrested Wednesday for blocking traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge, according to law enforcement sources. The demonstration, which halted traffic for approximately 30 minutes, involved about 30 activists wearing shirts that read "Have you seen my neighbor?" and "Sanctuary Campus Now."
Video footage captured some of the demonstrators sitting cross-legged on the bridge, chanting slogans such as "NYPD, KKK, ICE, they're all the same!" The protesters were demanding an end to ICE's actions and the release of Oscar Belgal, an undocumented immigrant from the Dominican Republic who was shot and detained by ICE agents in the Bronx earlier in October. Belgal reportedly has a criminal record.
The NYPD confirmed that multiple individuals were taken into custody on or near the span, with sources indicating around 13 arrests. Some protesters were seen being escorted by officers into police vehicles, while others complied voluntarily. The specific charges against the arrested individuals were not immediately available.
